Sailing made its first appearance on the Canada Games schedule at the 1969 Canada Summer Games in Halifax-Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. Gimli, Manitoba is one of the satellite venues for the 2017 Canada Summer Games. Sailing was one of the three sports open to able bodied and para athletes which took place on Lake Winnipeg during the first week of the 2017 Canada Summer Games.

PEI was proud to take part. Coach Eric Degenais had been preparing for athletes for these games for several years.

The Gimli Yacht Club was the official venue for the 2017 Canada Summer Games sailing competitions. The club sits right in the heart of Gimli on 1 Avenue overlooking Lake Winnipeg. In front of the club is the marina and Gimli Seawall Gallery - a long stretch of concrete wall coloured with 72 different mural paintings. Inside the club are spaces to host community gatherings as well as a separate space for sailing school.

The yacht club first opened its doors in July 1969 when the Pan American Games came to Winnipeg and chose Gimli for its sailing competitions. Since then, the venue has hosted competitions at provincial, national, and international levels, and even hosted the Pan American Games’ sailing competitions when they returned to Winnipeg in 1999.

Sailing took place during the first week of the Games from July 30 to August 4, 2017. Sailing is one of three sports that able bodied and para athletes will participate in at the 2017 Games in three different categories:

  1. Under 21 (no younger than 15) Male Category

  2. Under 21 (no younger than 15) Female Category

  3. Para Sailing Mixed Category
